"Real singing is the spirit of the singer floating in vocalized air. To this voice all hearts and minds listen; the spirits of the singer and of the listener meet." - Albert Baker Chaney "The Tone Line" c. 1896
Your voice is your birthright and serves as your unique aural identifier. Here’s a secret: you already know how to sing! You began singing as a tiny baby with your first little "cooing" sounds. Singing is a natural act—your voice is the first instrument. Nothing on earth can convey the emotional, human experience like the voice.
Healthy vocal technique for singers is crucial, especially in jazz singing, where both technical mastery and emotional expression fuse seamlessly. If listeners hear a lack of technique when you sing, your musical message may become overshadowed. However, the emotional and spiritual aspects of singing are equally important. Exceptional singers encompass both technique and emotional connection. Remember, singing doesn’t always have to be "pretty" or "perfect." In fact, perfection can sometimes lead to uninspired performances.
I voraciously study voice training and vocal production, applying concepts both to my own voice and those I coach. I understand what good, healthy singing feels and sounds like. Yet ultimately, you are the expert of your own voice. It’s essential to get to know your voice and experiment with what it can do for you. Through our coaching sessions, I will guide you to ensure that singing feels rewarding in all respects.
SO, WHO ARE YOU?
You might be someone who used to sing in the past but has taken a break and now seeks constructive, gentle guidance. Or perhaps you’re an instrumentalist wanting to explore singing while you play. Maybe you’ve always dreamed of getting up and singing karaoke at a bar. Whatever your background, the only requirement I have is your earnest desire to explore your voice.
