Vocal Coaching with Angela

MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

"Real singing is the spirit of the singer floating in vocalized air. To this voice all hearts and minds listen; the spirits of the singer and of the listener meet." - Albert Baker Chaney "The Tone Line" c. 1896

Your voice is your birthright. Your voice is your unique aural identifier. And here’s a secret: you already know how to sing! You began singing as a tiny baby when you made your first little “cooing” sounds. Singing is a natural act - the voice is the first instrument. Nothing on earth can convey the emotional, human experience like the voice.

Healthy vocal technique for singers is extremely important. If your lack of technique becomes the thing that listeners hear when you sing, your musical message will be overshadowed. However, the emotional and spiritual aspects of singing cannot be minimized. Great singers encompass both technique and emotional connection. That does not mean that singing has to always be "pretty" or "perfect." In fact, pretty and perfect singing can be boring and uninspiring.

I voraciously study vocal production, putting concepts into practice with my own voice and with the people I coach. I know what good healthy singing feels and sounds like. But you are the expert of your own voice. You have to get to know your voice, and play with what your voice can do for you. I will coach you so that singing will feel good in all of the ways.

SO, WHO ARE YOU?

Maybe you are a person who used to sing back in the day but you've been away from it for awhile - and you need some constructive, gentle, guidance. Maybe you are an instrumentalist who wants to dip your toe into singing when you play. Maybe you have always wanted to just get up and sing karaoke at a bar. Whoever you are, the only thing I require of you is an earnest desire to explore your voice.

Some of the things we do in a lesson include:

-Warm ups

-Breathing

-Vowel/tone production

-Rhythm concepts

-Improvisation concepts

-Choosing material

-Choosing your keys

-Learning tunes

-Getting charts together

-Listening

-Talking about music

Note: I am heavily focused on jazz singing because that is what I have studied for the last 30 years. If you are looking for a Broadway or Classical teacher, I can give you a referral to some great teachers out there.
